there are many flowers on each stem and they are about 4 feet tall...

I think you are describing Asters also known as michaelmas daisies. They come in sizes from dwarf to 5 feet tall but always bloom at the end of summer. They are perennial and will spread if they are happy. Here's a pic :-)

Its called Delphinium and it gets really tall with small flowers.

Take a look at this link as it comes in a few colours but sounds like a Michaelmas daisy.

Reply:Its a Michaelmas daisy a member of the Chrystanthemum family and appears every Autumn.
