Rafflesia is a genus of parasitic flowering plants. It was discovered in the Indonesian rain forest by an Indonesian guide working for Dr. Joseph Arnold in 1818, and named after Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the leader of the expedition. It contains 15-19 species (including four incompletely characterized species as recognized by Meijer 1997), all found in southeastern Asia, on the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra and Kalimantan, West Malaysia, and the Philippines. The plant has no stems, leaves or true roots. It is an endoparasite of vines in the genus Tetrastigma (Vitaceae), spreading its root-like haustoria inside the tissue of the vine. The only part of the plant that can be seen outside the host vine is the five-petaled flower. In some species, such as Rafflesia arnoldii, the flower may be over 100 cm in diameter, and weigh up to 10 kg. Even the smallest species, R. manillana, has 20 cm diameter flowers. The flowers look and smell like rotting meat, hence its local names which translate to "corpse flower" or "meat flower" (but see below). The vile smell that the flower gives off attracts insects such as carrion flies, which transport pollen from male to female flowers. Little is known about seed dispersal, however, tree shrews and other forest mammals apparently eat the fruits and disperse the seeds. Rafflesia is an official state flower of Sabah in Malaysia, as well as for the Surat Thani Province, Thailand.
The name "corpse flower" applied to Rafflesia is confusing because this common name also refers to the Titan Arum (Amorphophallus titanum) of the family Araceae. Moreover, because Amorphophallus has the world's largest unbranched inflorescence, it is sometimes mistakenly credited as having the world's largest flower. Both Rafflesia and Amorphophallus are flowering plants, but they are still distantly related. Rafflesia arnoldii has the largest single flower of any flowering plant, at least when one judges this by weight. Amorphophallus titanum has the largest unbranched inflorescence, while the Talipot palm (Corypha umbraculifera) forms the largest branched inflorescence, containing thousands of flowers; this plant is monocarpic, meaning that individuals die after flowering.

Need to know the name of a flower.?
This flower grows very low and prolific. It has a waxy stem and leaves, and is in a variety of colors. Had a bed of it with Dusty Miller outside my door in Maryland. It bloomed every morning in the spring and summer. Little maintainance required. Alway thought it was called peat moss, but it's not known as that in Georgia.

Can anyone tell me the name of this flower?
I'll describe it as best as I can....right now two of these bushes are about 5 feet tall, the flower resembles a hybiscus flower. One bush has purple flowers with a dark reddish center with a yellow cone-like stem in the middle. The other one has white flowers with a dark purpleish/reddish center with a yellow stem. The dark green leaves fall off during the fall months and starts to rebloom in July. Hummingbirds seem to like them, I just have no idea what they are. Thanks

Does anyone know the name of the flower that "pops" when you touch it?
When I was younger we used to touch these little yellow/orange flowers on a bush and the bloom would "pop" off. These flowers were in the Michigan/Ohio area where I grew up. The only flower I can find is the bunchberry but it is not the right leaf (too dark and waxy) or color of bloom (white).

I need help finding the name of a red plant/flower?
Last summer I bought a red plant from KMart, but it didn't have a tag on it. I'd like to buy another one but I don't know what it's called. It is a large plant type looking flower, with red fluffy things hanging off. When I replanted it, it got a lot larger, the fluffly red things, fell off and regrew threw out the summer and fall. Can anyone tell me what this plant/flower is called?

Reply:Not sure of the real latin name but I think they call them "buttons", like blue or purple buttons. (not to be confused w/ bachelor buttons...totally, totally different.
They are really inexpensive and you can get them at places like walmart and kmart in the spring. I know that they are annuals; so they do not come back every year. (at least here in PA anyway!)
I plant them with red gerraniums and they look really pretty and vibrant together.

Reply:Not sure of the real latin name but I think they call them "buttons", like blue or purple buttons. (not to be confused w/ bachelor buttons...totally, totally different.
They are really inexpensive and you can get them at places like walmart and kmart in the spring. I know that they are annuals; so they do not come back every year. (at least here in PA anyway!)
I plant them with red gerraniums and they look really pretty and vibrant together.

Reply:Your flower is an Ageratum hybrid. Ageratum is an annual and readily available at garden centres in spring for summer flowering, available in powdery blues, white, and sometimes pink, in various sizes from very dwarf to over a foot tall.

Trying to find the name of a flower?
There are many in a pot, they are about 3-5 inches tall. Really fragile. Kinda looks like a clover type plant but the leaves are more triangular. Just 3 leaves on each. The name was on the bottom started with an 'O'. But I want to try and find one this weekend. I am impatient. I think it was like Olaxsis Olaxia or something like that. AHHHH!!

this flower used to be very popular, many years ago, it is tall, with dark green large leaves, and has a flower, usually red, that blooms slowly, up a stalk. I think this flower has a bulb. ?? Any idea ??

Since she lived in Illinois, grandma would dig up the roots and save them in the cellar over the winter, since they aren't hardy in a cold winter climate. They are rhizomes (a thickened root) rather than a true bulb but most people think of them as bulbs.
About 15 or 20 years ago, new varieties of cannas started becoming popular. Now they come in lots of different flower colors, including yellow, orange, pink, cream, white, and bicolors, as well as reds, and there are some with very colorful leaves as well. Many are shorter than the older varieties. But even though I grow some of the new varieties, I will always remember the tall, exotic-looking ones I remember from childhood.

The only drawback is they only bloom once. just be sure to place them near a window so they get some sunlight.

Does anyone know the name of the blue poppy flower that once was considered a fantasy myth?
Utpala? But that is more a blue lotus.
It could also be the Tibetan Blue Poppy (Meconopsis grandis)

Reply:I think what you might be referring to is the flower commonly called the Himalayan Blue Poppy, the Latin name for it being meconopsis betonicifolia. I tried growing these once without success (not unusual as useless when it comes to plants).

What is the name of a deep orange flower with purple pistils?
The flower was growing in my backyard. It has a touch of purple at the base of each petal. The stem is thick and has hairs on it. The leaves have some fines hairs on them and they also have little needles at the end of each section. I assume it is to protect it from being eaten by bugs or animals.

It does sound like a poppy but it would help if you described the flower shape %26amp; leaf shape. Poppies have very distinct flower shape, the leaves are tissue thin, the seed head forms an inverted cone with a "hat", and the buds are very fat and egg shaped.
If it is a poppy as everyone seems to think then this website should have a picture.

Reply:Oriental Poppies- they are a perrenial plant and are quite hardy. Stems exude a milky substance when cut that is an irritant. Because of this substance the flowers don't work well for cut flowers.
