Reply:The Latin name is Strobilanthes kunthiana and the common name is the neelakurinji . This one is famous for its 10- 12 year spaced mass blooming. They last bloomed in 2006

Another in the same family of plants is the lavender karvy flower (Strobilanthes callosus) that are also found to bloom on the Nilgiris but can have a shorter bloom cycle. Periods range from 4-8 in some regions up 10 - 12 years. They bloomed this year.
