Does anyone know the name of a flower that looks like velvet?

Apparently it's burgundy in color, ruffled in texture resembling the front of a poet shirt or in larger sizes a brain (?). Often seen in flower markets in Manhattan. Blooms in October also, so it's a fall flower. Any ideas?

Cockscomb is exactly what you are thinking of. Here's a pic.

Reply:The only VELVETY FLOWER I've ever seen is an AFRICAN VIOLET, I hope that helps, but you can probably find a book with fotos at the library. ask the ligrarian for a book on flowers that has color fotos!

Let us (me) know what it turns out to be -- I'm curious now!

Reply:It sounds like a petunia - they are velvety and ruffly in appearance and have a pleasant peppery scent - they come in different colors and varieties. They bloom spring thru fall tho.

Mums aren't that velvety but are fall bloomers, hmmmm.

Otherwise, I'd check out www.parkseed.com and do a search for fall blooming - their pictures are magnificent and very detailed.

also try www.gardenweb.com and ask your question there in one of their forums - it's free to signup and very helpful for answering all your gardening questions based on topics.
